"Workout
Warning Signals?"

It’s
one thing to breathe (and sweat) a little more heavily than
usual during an intense workout, but it’s another thing entirely
to find yourself gasping for air during a leisurely after-dinner
walk. While occasional exercise aches and pains are rarely cause
for alarm, certain symptoms that pop up out of the blue when you
exercise could sometimes signal something serious. If you’re
otherwise healthy and in good shape but experience any of the
warning signs in the chart below during a workout, stop what
you’re doing and see your doctor right away. |
|
What You Feel |
What It Could Mean |
Chest pain, pressure, or
tightness |
You’re
stacking on extra pounds: Overweight and age increase
the risk, since these can lead to excessive relaxation
of muscles at the back of the throat. |
Unusually rapid heartbeat |
Heart
disease, arrhythmia, anemia, thyroid disease, or even
just too much caffeine |
Difficulty breathing |
Heart
disease or asthma |
Fainting |
Heart
disease, arrhythmia, a glitch in your nervous system,
dehydration, or low blood sugar |
Severe headache |
Dehydration, stroke, cerebral aneurysm. Or high blood
pressure |

TWO EXTREMES
do you need a Thyroid Test? Here are some clues that
will tell you. But before we go into that, you need to
know a little about the 2 main thyroid conditions. |
|
|
HYPOTHYROIDISM,
or under-active thyroid is most commonly found in women
past the age of 50. the pituitary gland sends more
thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) into the bloodstream
when it senses that levels of the thyroid hormone
thyroxine are low. If the condition is severe enough and
left untreated, hypothyroidism can raise your
cholesterol and blood pressure, and increase your risk
of heart disease.
Treatment for an underactive thyroid is a synthetic from
of thyroxine. |
HYPERTHYROIDISM
If your TSH is below normal, it means there’s too much
thyroid hormone, and production slows down to compensate
for that excess. This condition is most commonly
diagnosed in women in their 20s and 30s. women over 50
with hyperthyroidism are at greater risk for
osteoporosis because the body breaks down bone faster
than it can make it. The treatment for an overactive
thyroid is usually a one-time radio iodine pill.
Everyone should get a TSH test starting at age 50 and
then every 5 years after or sooner if you’re having
symptoms. |
